Book Review: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
The boy’s name is Santiago, and he lives his life in a way very few can. First, he is a shepherd who knows his flock well. Then, he meets a king who divines his past and future, and he leaves his flock behind. Afterwards, he is a stranger in a foreign land, searching for treasure. A thief steals his fortune, and a merchant grants the opportunity for him to gain it back. Later, Santiago believes he is ready to return home, but his heart urges him to continue searching for his treasure. As a result, Santiago ventures into the shifting sands of the merciless desert.
Though Santiago is searching for treasure, he also discovers more about himself than he ever could have imagined. He learns that he knows more than one language, that he can read omens, that the wind whispers the secrets of the desert. Every part of his journey helps Santiago evolve, each incarnation becoming richer with more than worldly wealth. With simple, but penetrating, wisdom, Santiago’s story is a guide to achieving the deepest desires of one’s heart.

The very first thing I want to say is that there are so many good quotes in this book. It’s an amazing book to use for self-reflection, in my opinion. There are several explanations and stories about the consequences of choices. There are methods to have a deeper connection with the world and the people around you. There are instructions on how to pursue your dreams. There’s exploration of how to love without doubt or possessiveness.
There are lessons about making things more complicated than they need to be. It explains that learning also requires doing, and that different people learn in different ways. It’s basically a treasure trove of life lessons. The language is simple and compelling, making the book hard to put down once it’s picked up. I was rooting for Santiago because I felt like if he could make his dreams come true, it would be possible for me too. It’s always great to find a book that’s truly inspiring and motivating.
I’d give it 5 stars! I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to know how to achieve their dreams.
