Book Review: Happily Ever Afters by Melanie Cellier

Sarah and Evelyn have started new lives accompanying Ava, the new queen of Rangmere and their dear friend. The cousins intimately know the difficulty Ava had in securing the throne, and they’re happy to celebrate her success with the lavish festivities for a coronation and royal wedding. However, though off-duty as Ava’s personal guard, Evelyn discovers hints of dissatisfaction with Ava among the nobles at the wedding reception. Additionally, she spied another suspicious someone also listening in.

At the same reception, Sarah is having a delightful time dancing with the ever-so-charming and distinguished Miles when she spots her perturbed cousin on the sidelines. Abandoning Miles, she demands Evelyn explain her anxiety. She’s subsequently informed of the sketchy plot towards Ava and her new Chief Advisor, Lord Adelmar — who just so happens to be Miles’s father. Evelyn believes Sarah should stay away from Miles to avoid being in danger, but Sarah’s having far too much fun with their flirtation to give it up.

Evelyn also believes she should take her own advice and stay far away from Jake, the other eavesdropper from that night. Despite Jake’s friendliness toward her, Evelyn is unsure whether he’s on the side of the crown or the conspirators. In order to ensure Ava’s safety, the cousins have no choice but to win the complex games of court.

I loved the close relationship between Evelyn and Sarah. There are several times when Evelyn says what Sarah is thinking and vice versa. They’re easily able to guess each other’s moods and thoughts, and they have quite a bit of fun teasing each other. Sarah often encourages Evelyn to be more open and have fun, while Evelyn reminds Sarah to take things more seriously. They balance each other out.

Sarah is a vivacious character. She loves fashion and gaining the upper hand in social situations. She likes Miles, but she remains cautious about their difference in status, since he’s a noble and she’s the daughter of a merchant. Sarah also works to overcome her fears of physical confrontation as there are several instances of danger which compel her to protect herself.

In comparison, Evelyn is more cautious. She prefers sturdy clothes that allow her enough movement to fight, and would much rather stand on the sidelines unless dancing is involved. Evelyn struggles to gain respect from the other castle guards as the sole female guard, especially since Ava directly appointed her as personal guard.

5 stars for the dynamic duo! Recommended for anyone who loves awesome girls taking down bad guys, capturing hearts along the way.
