Black people try to gatekeep blackness for reasons that have nothing to do with appearance, also. For example, my roommate ties blackness to being immersed in black culture. She often tells me I'm not black because I haven't seen a certain movie or I don't know a particular song or trend, despite the fact that I'm not light-skinned at all (check profile pic).

I don't argue with her because I understand that our experiences are going to be different considering we have a 14 year age difference and she was raised in a nonreligious American family in the midwest while I was raised in a Catholic African household on the east coast, but it aggravates me that she completely dismisses my lived experience having black skin just because I lack cultural knowledge she deems essential.

So many books, so little time. Someone needs to invent something to transfer all my stories directly from my brain to my word docs so I have more time to read.
